Breathtaking Gardens of Harrogate and Yorkshire Dales National Park, England
Garden Design's Self-Guided Day Trip to Harrogate, England
Set in the heart of Yorkshire, the Harrogate District is sure to become a favorite. You could easily fill several days visiting the historic castles and abbeys, attractive towns and quaint villages, all set in some of the most breathtaking countryside in England, but be sure to allow time to also visit some of the exceptional public gardens, both large and small.
This day trip introduces you to just three such gardens, and starts the day at the exceptional RHS Garden Harlow Carr, a personal favorite of mine. Whether you are a lifelong gardener or a just a casual garden tourist, Harlow Carr will leave you with an abundance of inspiring ideas that you will want to try at home. From here, it is just minutes to Valley Gardens, situated in the Montpelier Quarter of Harrogate—a traditional English park with a bandstand, recreational opportunities, and acres of woodland and floral displays. Finally, a short scenic drive into the Yorkshire Dales National Park will bring you to Parcevall Hall Gardens. This 24-acre historic garden comprises many different areas with wonderful views in every direction from the upper terraces.
Check out the National Garden Scheme. for other public and private gardens that may be open when you are in the area.
