Visit the Hidden Gardens of Portland
Garden Design's self-guided day trip to 3 treasured gardens
Portland is perhaps best known for its abundance of microbreweries, bike trails, and its enticing foodie scene including the famous Voodoo Doughnuts, but the mild climate also ensures lush parks and gardens. And while you may well have heard of the Portland Rose Garden and Japanese Garden, this trip will take you off those well-trodden paths to explore some hidden treasures. Local interior and garden designer JJ De Sousa assures us that we can manage all three of these modestly-sized gardens, including a stop for lunch, in five hours without feeling rushed.
Begin the day meandering along the peaceful, woodland trails of the Leach Botanical Garden before heading to the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden. You’ll want binoculars to appreciate the many birds and waterfowl that make this garden their home, as well as your camera for capturing ideas for enchanting plant combinations. After lunch, you are sure to get lots of landscaping ideas from the display gardens at the Rogerson Clematis Garden.
