Outstanding Gardens of Marrakesh, Morocco
Garden Design's self-guided day trip to 3 unique Marrakesh, Morocco gardens.
If you’re ready for a truly unforgettable adventure, visit Marrakesh, a vibrant, bustling city on the edge of the Sahara Desert. Here, the cultures of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East collide in a glorious flamboyant medley. Spending some of her childhood growing up in Jordan, our local garden expert JJ De Sousa loves the culture, lifestyle, food, and colors of this region. She travels frequently to Morocco, saying she has never felt nervous or uneasy there. Rather, she finds the cacophony of the old walled city energizing and loves the twisting alleyways and busy souks of the medina. The remarkable light in this region also affords outstanding photographic opportunities for keen amateurs and professionals alike, and JJ has three special gardens to recommend so you can hone your skills.
JJ suggests you begin at Anima, a 5-acre botanical stage for theatrical art and plantings. (Yes, that really is a Picasso!) Your next stop will be Majorelle, a small but interesting courtyard garden rich in color and unexpected vignettes. You'll finish the day back in the heart of the medina at the Jardin Secret, a former Sultan’s palace that has been recently renovated and reimagined. This peaceful enclave is a tranquil escape from the congested yet mesmerizing medina beyond the pale pink walls.
