I wish I lived in your neighborhood, I'd love to see it change through the seasons. And I appreciate your honesty about how much time it takes. I'm too embarassed to say how much time I spend in my garden when people ask. Like you I go for full bloom dense plantings. My favorite question is when people say "Is it low maintenance?" !!
Thank you all for your nice comments. It is such fun to share this effort with professionals as well as part time gardeners. It is a labor of love but gives so much joy each and every day that I can not imagine not gardening. I actually feel sorry for people who don't like to garden! It is such a rewarding hobby ( I guess mine is a bit more than a hobby!) and makes for a happy place to be and work. This yard is my gym and more fun to be in than most!
@gottagarden Thanks for your feedback. Actually, the magazine is changing a lot and they are featuring a "My Garden" in the magazine as well. Of course, online, we have the opportunity to feature so many more, which is why it's great to share them with our virtual community of readers. I do hope you'll give the magazine another chance in 2011, where there will definitely be more of an emphasis on home gardens than in the past.@gardenmeadow The print staff is putting the next issue to bed as we speak—I hope there's more for you to like in this new issue. We're so excited about the 2011 slate for Garden Design, both online and in the print edition and we like to think there's something for everyone in there.
I completely agree with "gottagarden": what an uplifting garden and associated description. I love that I don't have to read several pages about a garden -- just a short couple of paragraphs suffices. It gave me the few facts and a little about the personality of the gardener/homeowner (she sounds lovely). As a professional gardener and designer, I'm pleased to read that this kind of beauty takes alot of time (in her case, 40-60 hours/week on a 1/4 acre--wow!) -- most homeowners don't realize this when they ask for such a garden to be installed (and one doesn't "install" such a garden!).Also agree with the comments about Garden Design; may also be letting my subsription go soon, especially after the receiving the latest issue. Reading it --actually, I didn't "read" it, I looked at it -- the word that came to mind is "sterile". Where is the garden design in the Marfa article? Aweful! I won't dissect the entire issue, but it was downright a bad issue. Sure hope the next ones are not like that. Like I said, I'm a professional designer, but this is not the kind of information I can use or take pleasure in reading.
Fabulous garden! Really enjoyed the long write up explaining the history, the maintenance, the philosophy. I felt like I just visited in person. Gorgeous!Wonder why garden design stopped doing this in their magazine? All their articles seem to be about buying accessories - I mean how many patio sets can one own? They don't like flowers and focus on commercial buildings and businesses, rarely the homeowner. That's why after 20 years I am letting my subscription lapse. They have intentionally turned their focus to professional designers rather than homeowners. And really - which is the bigger market? Thanks for the wonderful show.
I love this story! I especially love the dramatic blizzard photo at the end.
