The San Diego Horticultural Society welcomes Tom Spellman from Dave Wilson Nursery, the largest growers of deciduous fruit, nut and shade trees in California. Tom will discuss how the objective of "backyard orchard culture" is the prolonged harvest of tree-ripe fruit from a small space. He'll show how many different varieties of fruit trees with different ripening times can be planted close together for smaller, but year-round harvests and how trees can be size-controlled by summer pruning. Tom will also discuss planting and training techniques, including the selection of compatible varieties, espaliering fruit trees, hedgerow growing, and other space-saving strategies.
The evening starts at 6:00 p.m. Parking is free and everyone is welcome. Admission is free for members and $10 for non-members. Before the lecture a plant expert will discuss one exceptional plant (a “Hot Hort Pick”) that is a star in the garden.
