'Frozen Flora' is a series of mesmerizing botanic photographs—inert and illuminated, the flowers are very calming, if not a little unnerving. They are like a winter pond, remembering the vitality of spring.
Photographer Debbie Hartley chose her subjects for their color and translucency (most grew in her backyard), and then she froze them. Suspended in a block of ice and placed on a light box, the bright petals appear aglow with life; the leaves, poised to flutter—in fact, they are quite trapped, but what a beautiful death.
Debbie Hartley is an Australian photographer, and a portfolio finalist in Kew's International Garden Photographer of the Year competition.
