Contemporary Swiss artists Gerda Steiner and Jorg Lenzlinger hung flowers, seeds, and branches in a 17th-century church in Venice as part of the 50th Venice Biennale. They called it Falling Garden, a world in which visitors lie in repose on the mausoleum floor, while "the garden thinks for them."
Discovered growing in Vermont, Pinus strobus ‘Louie’ has brilliant golden needles, which hold their color year-round and really pop against the darker foliage in the shaded interior of the tree. Grows into a broad pyramid, about 10 feet tall and 6 feet wide in 10 years. Zones 3 to 8.
A member of the very popular, many-colored Sorbet series from grower PanAmerican Seed Co., Sorbet Black Duet is a sweet little bicolor, with a bright-purple face and velvety dark-plum wings. Sorbets are early to flower after winter has passed and continue through late spring. Plants are 6 inches high and wide; flowers are about an inch across.
