Garden Short Stories

Shaped by a deep love of nature, a spectacular view and a difficult slope, our gardens provide sanctuary, both for wildlife and us.

The treacherous slope was dangerous to mow, so I began planting shrubs on the steeper part of the hillside several years ago.

Each year I have been adding downward, transforming it from hazard to haven.

Deer and groundhog pressure on the lower level semi-formal vegetable and fruit parterres inspired a shift to native trees, shrubs and perennials, providing abundant food and habitat for pollinators and birds.

Over the last few years I am implementing an “age-in-place” approach, transitioning to more evergreens and shrubs, replacing higher-maintenance perennials, installing durable edging, and improving hardscaping for (relative) ease of care.
