As the promise of spring begins to unfold, the Northwest Flower & Garden Show in Seattle, Wash. will highlight “Art in Bloom” as the region’s top garden designers, horticulturists, and artists showcase their passion through a number of exhibits, a floral competition and a full acre of show gardens that are sure to inspire for the coming months.
In 2001, Sue Ingram’s world was rocked. Her husband was admitted to the hospital in a near coma from diabetes, an event which was to have lifelong implications for his health. To find peace through her pain, and to create a place of rest and revival to help him heal, she turned to gardening on her Kennewick, Washington property.
In the mid-1950s, when Ione and Emmott Chase broke ground on a parcel of former logging land, their intent was simply to build a place to retire in the western Washington terrain they’d known and loved all their lives. They never thought it would become a celebrated public garden, but the 4.5 acres they referred to as their “yard” now welcomes visitors from April through October and has been identified as an outstanding example of regional modernist design that’s well worth preserving.
The first trees were just planted in Beacon Food Forest, a forager-friendly garden in Seattle. With a projected seven acres of fruits, nuts, and vegetables, it will be the nation's largest public edible landscape.
