Rethinking the Greenhouse

Greenhouse design has long been dictated by building materials and gardeners' love of tradition, but recently designers have been thinking outside the (glass) box.

New materials, such as plastic and laminated glass, offer better insulation and more possibilities with design; now greenhouses appear in forms as wide-ranging as a giant sphere on the Italian waterfront to small cubes stacked outside a Tokyo restaurant.

At right, Monika Gora of Gora Art & Landscape, who was inspired by London's 1851 Crystal Palace, designed a thoroughly modern greenhouse, a structure crafted from laminated glass over a glass-and-steel arch, for the members of a retirement community in Malmö, Sweden, to enjoy.
