Pretty much any outdoor space, regardless of size, can be transformed for entertaining. In 2011, GARDEN DESIGN re-designed the garden of the James Beard Foundation—a 45-by-22-foot backyard—and the result is perfect for hosting garden parties.
Though modest in size, we found space in the foundation's backyard for a full-size commercial refrigerator (hidden in a shed), as well as three smaller refrigerators, joined with a custom-steel counter in the middle of the garden. The latter provides easy access to wines and liquors for pre-dinner cocktails, as well as creating a counter space for hors d'oeuvres.
Some of our other tricks: Overgrown dark corners were transformed with string lights, hanging planters helped disguise fencing, and begonias and oakleaf hydrangeas replaced sprawling overgrown ground covers.
