In this Green Award-winning garden in Paradise Valley, Arizona designed by Steve Martino of Cactus City Design, inexpensive chic sheets of industrial B-decking clad the roof of this sculptural pergola with its dramatic 6-foot cantilever. The wide-rib panels are angled to provide shade from the hot afternoon sun.

Garden by Cactus City Design: When mountains are this imposing, a bridge element such as this lavender-painted wall (part of the outdoor shower) brings it down to human scale.

Garden by Cactus City Design: The magic of walls is that they pull shadows out of the air, says Martino of the desert-flower-hued structures that provide the perfect foil for sculptural specimens like cactus and agave.

Garden by Cactus City Design: Martino refinished the existing lap pool and added a terrace around it. The steps were designed to be out of the way of kick turns, a perfect feature for this homeowner who swims for exercise. The pool is finished in black Pebble Sheen, and the deck is covered with Adouquin pavers from Mexico.

In this Green Award-winning garden in Westchester County, New York designed by Reed Hilderbrand, a picnic table beside the edible garden is set on axis with a persimmon tree. Nearby, in the foreground, is a lush planting of purple- owered Mexican bush sage (Salvia leucantha).
In this Green-Award winning garden based in Oakland, CA, a curved retaining wall embellished with a sinuous railing by metal artist Chris French softens the bold geometry of the Margarido House, the first LEED-H Platinum certified custom home in Northern California. Designed by Lauren Schneider of Wonderland Garden and Landscape, the planting scheme plays a big part in the home's sustainability, with California natives, succulents and Mediterranean plants thriving in the lush, drought-tolerant garden.
Margarido House: A Jenner chaise by Oakland-based Concreteworks Studio rests on the concrete-and-thyme patio. The spaced concrete strips make the patio permeable.
Margarido House: Examples of the green hardscaping include fa¿ade cladding of recycled kiln trays from Heath Ceramics and a driveway of permeable pavers.
Margarido House: Viewed from above, the retaining wall is reimagined as a narrow hillside garden that is revealed as an intricate series of planting boxes bordering the stairway.
