Zen Modern, Brentwood. APLD was asked to define the formal front entrance to the home, which was off-angle to a long driveway approach, unintentionally drawing first-time visitors to the rear of the property. Our solution was to play off both the modern and Japanese aspects of the home, creating a traditional Japanese entry wall and wide double gate.

Zen Modern, Front Entry Garden. APLD designed this classic Japanese stone pathway to lead through the entry doors, transitioning to concrete pedestal platforms over the reflecting poo,l and continuing on a stone pathway to the front door. Japanese decorative elements and plantings completed the transformation.

Santa Monica Spanish Revival. This circa 1930’s Spanish Revival home was in serious disrepair when APLD’s client purchased it in 2008 and required a major renovation. Starting with a clean palette after removing all of the previous exterior elements, APLD worked with period and architecturally appropriate materials. We added a new entry walkway and walled entry courtyard utilizing classic Malibu decorative ceramic and saltillo tiles to enhance the classic architectural character.

Spanish Revival Patio with Banquette. A saltillo-tiled patio with overhead ramada and banquette surrounding a fire ring. In addition to the new pool and spa, this area provided an inviting outdoor living and entertaining space in the rear garden area.

Bel Air Traditional. The owners of this lovely Connecticut “farmhouse” have a passion for roses and have cultivated a number of rare varieties. APLD was asked to transform their estate property into a formal series of gardens to showcase their roses within classical parterres around a central water feature. Decomposed granite pathways lead through the formal gardens to a more informally planted garden.

Spanish Hacienda, Brentwood Park. This 1920’s Hacienda-style Spanish residence sits on over an acre. Commissioned by the long-time owners to update the gardens, APLD has spent several years editing and adding new plantings in keeping with the home's original spirit. We have complimented the existing gardens with a palette of tropicals, succulents, and many types of trees, including a fruit orchard.

Italianate Estate, Pacific Palisades. This Italianate estate built circa 1927 has been home to the owners for 26 years. They commissioned APLD to reconfigure the outdoor environments to create new planting schemes and a better flow through the gardens. Gardens on two levels have been integrated with this classic rill, which flows down a series of steps from the pergola in the upper garden to a lower dining patio with fountains at each terminus.

Art & Architecture in the Hollywood Hills. Architect Barry Gittelson designed this home while he was in architecture school in the late-50’s. He brought APLD in to revamp the outdoor space, challenging us to use the property's stored materials: chunks of concrete, some embedded with stone, black basalt flooring tiles, black beach pebbles, and brick. The new rear patio has a series of arcs combining broken concrete pieces, concrete with beach pebbles, smooth poured-concrete arcs with vertical slivers of basalt, and a curving brick path.

Eclectic Fusion in Studio City. The owners of this hillside home are inveterate travelers with an eclectic collection of artifacts which were APLD's inspiration for the outdoor environments. We created a series of decks, including a main deck off of the living room in which we incorporated their Moroccan finds and custom-designed the furnishings, patinated steel planters, and the fire pit.
