Prickly Pear cactus is a native fruited cactus that will survive in zones 5-7 in the US. It gets a yellow flower and forms a fleshy fruit that can be used for jams/jellys. Also hens and chicks are succulents (not cacti) but do exhibit a desert kind of look.
