By the way, I went to see Christian Dior's gardens in Granville, France, where they grow lantana as standards (another way of raising them up high) and they grow a mix of brightly colored flowers, including pink and purple petunias, and marigolds (like you were thinking) underneath—there are photos in my post here: http://www.gardendesign.com/blogs/editors-blog/visiting-christian-diors-gardens
