A low growing clover is a great low maintenance ground cover that will do just fine in Zone 6. Requires no mowing and is fairly inexpensive.

Pachysandra 'Green Sheen' is super-shiny and evergreen. It grows pretty fast once established. Gaultheria 'Red Baron' (Wintergreen)has beautiful red color to the foliage and brillant red berries. It does need to stay pretty wet, though.

My vote goest to Vinca Minor or Variegated Vinca, as well. Euonymus coloratus is also very nice.
